Quick answer

English has three time groups (present, past and future), and each group has four forms: simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. That makes twelve tenses. In Marathi, the time groups are वर्तमानकाळ, भूतकाळ आणि भविष्यकाळ. Learn one pattern for each form and practise it in real sentences.

What is a tense?

A tense shows when an action happens. Marathi calls this काळ (kaal): वर्तमानकाळ (present), भूतकाळ (past) and भविष्यकाळ (future). Each time group has four forms: simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous.

The three forms of the verb used below are V1 (base form: go), V2 (past form: went) and V3 (past participle: gone).

Frequently asked questions

How many tenses are there in English?

There are twelve standard tense forms: four each in the present, past and future groups.

What is the easiest way to remember tenses?

Learn the time group first, then the four forms: simple (habit or fact), continuous (in progress), perfect (finished or completed) and perfect continuous (duration).

What are V1, V2 and V3?

V1 is the base form of the verb (go), V2 is the simple past form (went) and V3 is the past participle (gone).
